WELCOME

You are welcome to the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine, Kaduna State University.

Getting admitted to the Kaduna State University in the College of Medicine through to the Faculty of Clinical Sciences should fulfil a life-long ambition for students who intend to practice medicine anywhere in the world and become global players in the provision of health care services.

The Faculty is one out of five in the College of Medicine and is the exit Faculty for medical students undertaking the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme. Medical students do the introductory postings in Surgery and Internal medicine at the 400 level before proceeding to the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences and then back to the Faculty in their 5th and 6th year to do Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Community medicine, Internal medicine and Surgery. They also take lectures in Community medicine during their preclinical training.

It is in this Faculty that students in the clinical departments, are exposed to the management of various diseases especially those prevalent in the tropics and low income countries. Students undertake rural postings where clinical services are provided, including community diagnosis of diseases, and are thus exposed to social and economic issues that impact on the health of communities. Students undertake a mandatory research project in the 6th year of training that exposes them to the rudiments of research.

During their three year training in the Faculty, students have the opportunity to interact with a large volume of patients in the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Secondary care hospitals and Primary Health Care centres that are affiliated to the university. Our graduates are positioned to pursue further academic trainings, are well exposed, equipped, confident and can work anywhere in the world.

The mandate of the Faculty in addition to teaching, includes research and community service in alignment to that of the University.

Our staff undertake research at the various departments that is relevant and of benefit to the community and humanity at large. The large volume of patients and the overwhelming health, economic and social challenges prevalent in our setting, provide an opportunity for collaboration in cutting-edge research.

Kaduna State, a large state, is situated in the middle of Nigeria, the most populous black nation in the world. Staff of the Faculty are very enthusiastic and are involved in providing preventive and clinical community services to the diverse people of the country.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Faculty of Clinical Sciences was established in April 2017 when the former Faculty of Medicine transited to the present College of Medicine, Kaduna State University. In September 2018, the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences was created out of this faculty. These changes became necessary when the collegiate system took effect and the medical students who had completed their basic medical sciences training needed to proceed further to the clinical part of their training.
The pioneer Dean was Dr Hussain Yahya. I was appointed Dean in August 2021 when his tenure ended.
The Faculty graduated its first set of doctors in 2020 and has since then continued to do so. There has been a positive feedback about their performance at their various places of work and many of them have already passed the qualifying postgraduate examinations to start the specialist training.
