MISSION

The Mission of the Kaduna State University is to provide an all-round University education of the highest standard for the development of the individual and the State while inculcating the spirit of love, tolerance, understanding and Unity in the State in particular and the Country in general.

VISION

The vision of Kaduna State University is to become a University of the world-class standard with excellence in applied Sciences and sustainability studies.

CORE VALUES

The core values of Nursing Sciences (NS) typically revolve around professionalism, accuracy, integrity, collaboration, and continuous learning.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Department of Nursing Science, nestled within the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at Kaduna State University, emerged in 2019 with a vision to elevate the standard of nursing education. This vision has propelled the department through several significant milestones:

Inception and Founding Principles

In 2019, recognizing the burgeoning need for top-tier nursing education, Kaduna State University took a visionary step in establishing the Department of Nursing Science. This initiative was driven by a steadfast commitment to equip aspiring nursing professionals with comprehensive education and training, aligning with the ever-evolving healthcare landscape.

Regulatory Recognition and Accreditation

Following its inception, the Department underwent rigorous scrutiny by the National Universities Commission (NUC). In November 2019, a comprehensive verification was conducted, laying the foundation for regulatory recognition. In the subsequent year, 2020, the NUC granted official approval, endorsing the department’s adherence to academic standards and quality assurance.

Inaugural Student Intake and Academic Onset

The academic year 2019-2020 marked a historic moment as the Department of Nursing Science welcomed its inaugural cohort of students. This heralded the commencement of academic operations and paved the way for aspiring nursing professionals to embark on their educational journey.

Growth, Collaboration, and Accreditation Pursuits

Recognizing the need for expansion and elevation of standards, the department pursued growth and collaboration. In the year 2020, an advisory visit was conducted by the regulatory council, resulting in valuable recommendations for accreditation. The department responded swiftly, suing to address the advisory visit’s insights, further aligning with the quest for accreditation within the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences.

Leadership and Structural Enhancements

The department witnessed a transformative phase with the appointment of Attahir Ibrahim as the Head of Department, bringing in a wealth of experience and visionary leadership. Under his guidance, the department underwent strategic organizational restructuring, bolstering efficiency. Heads of Units, level coordinators, exam and timetable officers, and crucial departmental committees were appointed to streamline operations and facilitate the journey towards accreditation.

Academic Strength and Student Body

The present academic strength of the department stands at 11 dedicated academic staff, distributed across the four nursing specialities—Medical-Surgical Nursing, Maternal and Child Health Care, Mental Health, and Community Nursing. This diverse faculty forms the backbone of academic excellence, imparting knowledge and fostering growth in each specialization. The student body of the department is vibrant and dynamic, consisting of approximately 120 students spanning across the 100- to 300-levels. These students represent the future of nursing, poised to make a lasting impact in the healthcare domain through their education, dedication, and eventual practice.

Collaboration with College of Nursing, Tudun Wada

In a proactive move towards enriching student learning experiences, the department has established a collaborative partnership with the esteemed College of Nursing, Tudun Wada. This collaboration encompasses student demonstrations, allowing our students to access state-of-the-art facilities and gain practical exposure essential for their professional development.

The Department of Nursing Science at Kaduna State University is committed to excellence, fostering a nurturing environment, academic advancement, and contributions to the healthcare community.
