HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Department of Human Anatomy was established in 2008 at the commencement of the Faculty of Medicine Kaduna State University which translated into the full collegiate system in April 2017, mainly to train high-quality personnel for the provision of health services in the Country. At its inception, the Department offered training to Medical (MBBS) students only. The first set of Medical students were admitted in 2009 and the Department of Human Anatomy moved to its building in 2011 and became functional with one tenure and three visiting academic staff. In 2012, more academic staff, technologists and non-teaching staff were appointed to the Department. After the upgrading of the then Faculty of Medicine to the College of Medicine, the department became part of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences under the College.

The pioneer Head of Department was Dr. Yusuf Nadabo Abdullahi who served till 2018. After consultation in February 2018, Dr Danladi Sambo Amaza emerged as the Head of the Department and served meritoriously till April 2022. Since April 2022 till date, Dr Abdulwaheed A. Oyewale has been serving as the Head of the Department.

The Department retained the traditional dissection mode of instruction and blended it with all available new teaching methods. The department has qualified academic staff that are been assisted by able technologists. The Department offers a robust anatomy education to many undergraduate students pursuing courses in Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Radiography and Physiotherapy. Through a combination of didactic and hands-on cadaveric dissection, the students undertake a comprehensive and integrated course in Gross Anatomy, Neuroanatomy and Microscopic Anatomy and Developmental anatomy which form the basis for a medical career. Although dissection remains the main modality of study, the department has embraced IT in the instruction to undergraduate students.

Check the student’s handbook for admission requirements.
