HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Kaduna State Medical School was established in 2008 as one of the faculties in Kaduna State University to bridge the gap of the need for medical doctors and other healthcare personnel to improve healthcare delivery in the state. Since its establishment as a Faculty of Medicine, tremendous achievements have been recorded in the training of medical students especially at the pre-clinical level. In 2005, the State government approved Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital to serve as the teaching hospital for the University where the students will undertake their clinical training thus renaming it as Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital. Since the hospital was initially a specialist hospital a lot of efforts and resources were needed to upgrade it to the status of a teaching hospital.

In line with this, the hospital has undergone a lot of transformation in the areas of enacting enabling laws, re-organization of the governing structure, creating academic departments, improving physical infrastructures and provision of teaching facilities which include the establishment of a medical library. Following all these efforts, the Faculty received full National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation in 2015 and Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria ( MDCN) pre-clinical accreditation in 2016.

This accreditation paved the way for the commencement of clinical training which started in 2016. In January 2018, the College received accreditation for Laboratory Medicine (Pathology). In the meantime, the first set of students admitted to the Faculty in 2009 had to be sent to Uganda to complete their training.
In April 2017, the Faculty transitioned to the College of Medicine in line with the recommendation of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. The transition led to the creation of 5 Faculties namely; Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, and Faculty of Dentistry. The Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical and Clinical Sciences became fully operational immediately, while the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences became operational in 2018.
