HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The evolution of the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion at the College of Medicine, Kaduna State University, is a testament to its remarkable journey. In 2014, the University secured full accreditation from the Nigeria University Commission (NUC), a pivotal moment that allowed the then Faculty to conduct its inaugural professional MBBS examination. Following this success, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) was invited for professional accreditation, leading to a transformative visitation in 2015. The Department of Pathology was reorganized into four thematic departments, including Haematology and Blood Transfusion, setting the stage for the second MBBS professional examination.

In alignment with national regulations for tertiary medical education, the MDCN’s 2016 recommendation prompted the conversion of the Faculty of Medicine into the College of Medicine. This transition included the establishment of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and the Faculty of Clinical Sciences. Professor Mohammed Nasir Sambo played a pivotal role as the pioneer Provost, subsequently guiding the creation of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences in October 2018. This Faculty oversees the four Pathology departments (Anatomic Pathology & Forensic Medicine, Chemical Pathology & Immunology, Haematology & blood Transfusion and Medical Microbiology & Parasitology) The pioneer Head of Department was Dr Halima Bello-Manga, who was succeeded by the incumbent, Dr. Livingstone G. Dogara.
