WELCOME

Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) is the bedrock of modern medicine embracing a number of different disciplines that deal with blood, body fluid, tissue, and cells. Medical Laboratory Science is a degree program that prepares students for exciting, challenging and dynamic careers in the field of modern medicine.

Medical Laboratory Scientists are health care professional, working behind the scenes using state of the art equipment and specific methods. The professionals (MLS) are trained to possess vast and extensive knowledge of normal and abnormal body physiology, correlation and interpretation of laboratory data

MISSION

The Mission of the Department is to train Medical Laboratory Scientist in the field of the modern laboratory medicine, biotechnology and research which are of best quality and of world standard.

VISION

To be the world standard in inculcating and training best Biomedical Scientists with high quality and efficiency in the delivery of services through ensuring and sustaining excellent academic standard.

The core values of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) typically revolve around professionalism, accuracy, integrity, collaboration, and continuous learning.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Kaduna State University was established in 2019. National Universities Commission (NUC) resource verification was done in November 2019 and approval from NUC was given in 2020. The first set of students were admitted into the University for 2019/2020 Academic session. The regulatory body, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, visited the department for Advisory visit in June/July, 2020. Dr Isah Abubakar Aliyu was the pioneer Head of Department, He then appointed Head of Units, level coordinator, exams officer as well as the needed departmental committees. All of which were inaugurated for effective transformation of the department into an accredited unit of the faculty. After successful tenure as the head of department, Dr Isah Abubakar Aliyu recommended MLS Armiya’u Ahmed Yelwa who served as an Ag HOD for two years (August 2021 – August 2023), and currently, the department is headed by Dr. Khadija Abdulfatai. The department is recording tremendous progress, presently we have three sets of students. The department is undergoing the processes of accreditation by the regulatory body – Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.
